Tetapi mungkin tidak mengejutkan jika ada yang beranggapan bahawa PCC atau Proton 'Iriz' (nama untuk PCC mengikut tekaan blog automotif) dilancarkan untuk menyaingi Perodua Axia.

Enjin

PCC seperti yang ditekankan oleh Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Proton, Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah, adalah kereta kompak dalam segmen B dengan kapasiti enjin di antara 1.3 liter dan 1.6 liter.

Berbanding dengan Perodua Axia, ia juga merupakan kereta kompak tetapi dalam kategori segmen A dengan enjin 1.0 liter.

Target Pasaran

Oleh itu, agak sukar untuk mengaitkan pelancaran Axia ataupun PCC (Iriz)  walaupun dalam bulan yang sama adalah untuk menyaingi antara satu sama lain.

Proton Iriz dilahirkan untuk memberi alternatif kepada pasaran segmen B iaitu Perodua Myvi, Honda Jazz, Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, Mitsubishi Mirage, Suzuki Swift dan Peugeot 208. Harga Proton Iriz

Ketepikan dahulu Honda Jazz, Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta dan lain-lain kerana PCC dilihat akan 'berentap' dengan Myvi yang merupakan pendahulu pasaran untuk segmen tersebut.

Jualan keseluruhan kenderaan penumpang didominasi oleh Perodua iaitu pengeluar kereta kompak terkenal dengan 196,071 buah bagi tempoh Januari hingga Disember 2013. Proton pula menduduki tempat kedua dengan 138,753 buah pada tempoh yang sama dan sedikit jatuh berbanding 141,120 buah pada tahun 2012.

Faktor ini mungkin menyebabkan Proton perlu melakukan sesuatu supaya mereka boleh terus bernafas dalam industri automotif yang semakin berdaya saing dan ditambah dengan Dasar Automotif Negara 2014 yang mengalu-alukan kedatangan pelabur untuk kenderaan cekap tenaga (EEV).
